The hundred-and-fifty-word version.

Maeve Cross writes contemporary motorsport romance with grown-up heat, brilliant heroines, and heroes who have been quietly in love for years before the heroine ever notices.

She came to romance late, by way of Drive to Survive, an ill-advised dive down a Lauren Asher rabbit hole, and one specific October Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas in 2023. What she wanted to read was not on the shelf. So she wrote it.

Chicane is the first book in her Kestrel Racing trilogy — a 95,000-word debut about an F1 chief engineer, the team principal who has been quietly in love with her for four years, and the secret he made to her dying father a decade earlier. Book Two, Apex, lands Out Now. Book Three, Pole Position, closes the trilogy fall 2026 — all three books in the same calendar year.

She lives in Charleston, South Carolina, with too many books, an unreasonable opinion about Eau Rouge, and a vintage Rolex Submariner she does not wear.

Short blurb (110 words).

Sloane Kincaid has hated Ronan Callahan for ten years — since the day her father died at Spa with Ronan in the next car. Now Ronan owns the F1 team that has just hired her as its chief engineer. He has, also, been quietly in love with her since 2022, has built the team around the seat she would one day come to fill, and is keeping a secret about her father that the man asked him to keep with his last breath. One season. One forbidden affair. One promise that is about to break. He falls first. He falls hard. Open door. HEA.

The hook line.

He fell first. He fell hard. He has a folder in his desk with her name on it.

N° 04 Talking points

Eight angles into the book.

01

The rise of motorsport romance.

Post-Drive to Survive, F1 fandom went female-skewing and book-buying. Lauren Asher's Dirty Air series sold a million copies. Chicane sits at the centre of that wave.

02

"He falls first" as the dominant 2026 trope.

The hero who has been quietly in love for years before the heroine ever notices. Asher's Lukas. Hazelwood's Adam. Chicane's Ronan Callahan is in the same lineage.

03

The brilliant heroine.

Sloane Kincaid is the only female lead engineer on the F1 grid. The book takes her engineering as seriously as it takes her love story. Strategy calls. Wing setups. Telemetry traces.

04

Grown-up open-door spice.

Plot-integrated. Worship register. Consent on the page. Aftermath every time. Six 4/5 scenes scaled across the book. No fade-to-black.

05

The forty-one-second voicemail.

The whole book was built around one scene — a kitchen in Charleston, an iPhone on a coffee table, and a forty-one-second voicemail from a dead man. Maeve has called this the first scene she wrote.

06

An indie debut at trade-publisher quality.

Released by Kestrel Press — a single-author imprint. Trade-grade typography (5.5 × 8.5, Garamond 11/13.5, KDP-spec). No corners cut.

07

The trilogy.

Three books, three couples, one year. Apex (Theo & Wren, out now) and Pole Position (Lane & Mateo, fall 2026) follow the same paddock cast and complete the trilogy in 2026.

08

Kestrel Press: motorsport-romance imprint.

Kestrel Press signs Maeve Cross beyond F1 — future series open to MotoGP, NASCAR, street racing. Chicane is the brand's first publication.

N° 05 Content notes

For careful readers.

Chicane is open-door romance written for adult readers. The following content appears on the page:

· Off-page parental death (past, racing accident, processed throughout the book)
· Grief and survivor's guilt
· One brief on-page violence beat (a man's hand is broken by another man, in a single Monaco corridor scene)
· Workplace power-dynamic (heroine reports to hero professionally)
· Explicit sexual content with adult consent on the page
· Brief alcohol use (champagne, wine, Vegas suite)

No: dubcon, taboo, degradation kink, on-page violence to the heroine, on-page parental death, infidelity, third-act breakup — all absent from the book.
